Ed Friedman is the author of eleven books of poetry and prose, including: The Black Star Pilgrimage (Frontward Books, 1976); The Telephone Book (Telephone Books/Power-Mad Press, 1979); and Humans Work (Helpful Book, 1988); as well as Mao & Matisse (1995), Drive Through the Blue Cylinders (2001), and Two Towns (2015), all three from Hanging Loose Press. La Frontera (Helpful Book, 1983), Lingomats (1980), and Ideal Boy (Helpful Book, 2015) are collaborations with visual artist Kim MacConnel. The New York Hatline (Bozeaux of London, 1979) and Away (Granary Books, 2001) are collaborations with visual and performance artist Robert Kushner. Ed’s performance works have been presented at the Kitchen (New York City), the Public Theater (N.Y.C.), and/or (Seattle), 80 Langton St. (San Francisco), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (L.A.), and elsewhere. He collaborated and played in bands with Garrett List, Peter Gordon, Rhys Chatham, Arthur Russell, Jim Burton, and others. From 1987 to 2003, Ed served as the artistic director for the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church in New York City, where he also co-edited the Project’s literary magazine, The World.
