Rafael Pérez Estrada (1934-2000) was a leading figure of avant-garde poetry and narrative in Spain. He was born in the Mediterranean city of Málaga and lived there most of his life. A divorce lawyer by profession, he published over 40 books in his lifetime and was a several-time finalist for Spain’s Premio Nacional de Literatura. Pérez Estrada wrote fairly conventional verse until 1985, when he experienced a type of epiphany as be looked out at the Mediterranean Sea and from that point forward primarily wrote prose poems and aphoristic series that were wildly distinctive and surreal.
