Hanging Loose Magazine

Issue 117

Our 59th year of continuous publication, with covers and an art portfolio by Pixie Alexander. It features a memorial for the late Hettie Jones and her poem “Having Been Her”; and a special supplement of reprinted postcards from the legendary Alternative Press (1969 – 1999), founded by painter Ann Mikolowski and poet Ken Mikolowski. From the foreword, written by Ken Mikolowski and supplement editor Rebecca Kosick: the Alternative Press “sent out packets of loose leaf letterpress and handmade prints” (Kosick), “turning artists and poets loose with 500 blank postcards each to do what they pleased” (Mikolowski). Through this process, they cultivated a unique and visionary body of print works that ended up all over the world. This issue of Hanging Loose features postcards from Ken Mikolowski, Donna Brook, Joanne Kyger, Andrei Codrescu, Elaine Equi, Eileen Myles, Maria Gitin, Robert Hershon, Maureen Owen, Alice Notley, George Tysh, and collaborations between Ron Padgett and Glen Baxter, Bill Berkson and Philip Guston, and Kenward Elmslie and Joe Brainard.

Others included in this issue are regulars such as Shane Allison, Jiwon Choi, Harley Elliot, Hunt Hawkins, Michael Koch, Joel Lewis, Heather Newman, Joyce Peseroff, Steven Ratiner, Carlos Reyes, Martin Skoble, Rick Snyder, Margaret D. Stetz, Warren Woessner, and Jeffrey Cyphers Wright; plus may writers new to Hanging Loose including Miguel Coronado, Gina du Bois, Mary Donnelly, Benjamin S. Grossberg, Andy Hacanis, Joanne Holdridge, Henry Israeli, Richard Krohn, Ariana Lee, Susan Lewis, L. Lois, George Longenecker, Katharyn Howd Machan, Jeffrey Joe Nelson, Aimee Noel, Abigail Raley, Douglas Rothschild, Allen Smith, and Allison Stone; a large selection from Wang Jiaxin curated and translated by John Balcom, a translation of Ma Lan by Charles Laughlin and Martine Bellen; and, as always, work by outstanding poets of high school age.
