Hanging Loose Magazine

Issue 118

Marking 60 years of continuous publication, with covers and an art portfolio by Omayma Khayat. This issue features a collection of letters by Professor Thalo Green, described by our editors as an academic “renowned for his courage in taking on and never shrinking from some of the most stormy, intense, abstruse, and colorful controversies of the mid-twentieth century.” It also includes “Flash and the Mundane,” a group of poems hand-selected by our guest editor, the poet and teacher Brother Yao. Finding in the verse he has chosen for inclusion the influence of Taoism and the I-Ching, Yao presents the work of contemporary poets who give diverse names to this section’s titular flash – “the spark in the moment that is the essence of poetry.” Yao invites us to read these poems as we would “a walk through a forest with a wide variety of trees and vegetation.” This section showcases poems by Sami Miranda, Jane Alberdeston Coralin, Shakeema Smalls, Ailish Hopper, Joe Wilkins, Fred Joiner, David Keplinger, Brian Gilmore, Omavi Shakur, Alan King, and Candace Wiley.

Other authors included in this issue are Shane Allison, Luke Beesley, David Blair, Arno Bohlmeijer, Susana H. Case, Bill Christophersen, Jakima Davis, Judy Darke Delogu, Shira Dentz, Crockett Doob, Joe Elliot, Cliff Fyman, Stephen Gibson, Diane Glancy, Mitch Highfill, D.A. Hosek, Sari LaFarge, John Latta, Jo-Ann Mort, Lisa Mullenneaux, Frank Murphy, Charlie Steak, Cornelia Veenendaal, Julie Marie Wade, Martin Willitts Jr., Dale Worsley, David Wright; a translation of Catullus by Matthew Nisinson; and, as always, work by outstanding poets of high school age.
